This dataset shows the extent of the National Forest for Wales. The National Forest for Wales includes a variety of diverse woodlands with a range of ages, sizes, settings and benefits. All National Forest sites are recognised as good quality, well managed woodlands. Some excel in providing access or engagement with their community, some are recognised for the sustainable way they are managed, others focus on the benefits they have for nature. All play their part in helping address the nature and climate emergencies and providing a long-lasting woodland resource for Wales.
This dataset is periodically updated as more forest gets incorporated into the national forest through the status scheme assessment process. Data relating to the Welsh Government Woodland Estates sites put forward for National Forest for Wales Status will be gathered using existing data sources. Other land included from maps supplied by applicants is digitised from aerial photography and OS basemaps and verified using land registry documents. All boundaries and areas of sites are shown only for indicative purposes, are subject to change at any time, and should not be taken as legally binding or definitive in any way.
The National Forest for Wales team are responsible for enabling woodland site owners to become part of the National Forest for Wales network. The extent of Prospective National Forest for Wales sites will be mapped as polygon data, metadata will be gathered with relevant site details in order to inform whether they meet the outcomes necessary.
The extent of ownership will be determined through discussion with the site owner and when a site comes into the National Forest for Wales scheme this will be verified using their Land registry documents.
Contacts and events will also be logged as point data so that we have a record of the extent of engagement across Wales about the National Forest including relevant funding streams that the team can signpost to.
